About Me

Some fun facts about me…

I’ll mostly read Dark Romance, Fantasy, Thrillers, and Horrors. Some of my favourite reads are the Royals of Forsyth U (the Lords trilogy), A Court of Mist and Fury, The Teacher and The Housemaid (Freida McFadden), and For The Fans.

I’m a massive horror movie fan. The scarier the better. No subgenres are off limits for me. Give me all of it. All time favourite is The Descent.

I’ll watch any Netflix documentary, from insane crimes, to the weird and wonderful nature docs. One of my favourite docs is Blackfish. Another favourite is the 24 Faces of Billy Milligan.

I’m a Disney kid, I will never grow out of that. I still watch every new movie they bring out. With no shame.

I’ve never been good about talking about myself. What on earth do you want to know? But I realise, aside from my book marketing, you know next to nothing about me. So, I will do my best to wrap up who E. L. Hicks is in the following paragraphs.

Born and raised in Essex, UK, 1997. School life wasn’t great. My one consistent passion was English. I always loved writing stories in primary school. Then I entered secondary school, and everything changed.

Looking back now, with the mental diagnoses I finally have, it all makes sense. I struggled. Big time. Trying to navigate a world where I felt wrong as a child through to my teen years, it was hard. Very hard.

Fast forward about ten perilous years, I found my love of writing again. I hadn’t written a single word through the ages of about 11-21. Maybe read a book here and there. And then, I had to make some big changes if I wanted to hold on to this thing we call life.

I had to find something to cling onto, to stop me falling through the abyss of no return. That’s when I rediscovered my love of storytelling.

Saying it was hard would be a severe understatement. I had forgotten everything I’d learned about the English language and fiction. My brain was mush. I couldn’t concentrate for longer than a few minutes before everything stopped making sense. But I knew I had to do this. This was going to be the only thing to save me.

Through sheer grit and perseverance, I forced my brain to start working again. It took a long time, but eventually, ever so slowly, The Dead and the Broken was born. That was the first novel I’d ever written from start to finish. I had done it. This was huge.

I got a taste for it, and it grew from there. And now, here we are.

Got my own website and everything. Who’d have thought? Certainly not anyone who knew me all those years ago. Certainly not myself.

But I survived, I endured, and I won.

Welcome to my little corner of the book world, thank you for being here with me on my crazy little journey. I hope you stay, I hope you enjoy, and I hope I can entertain you. Whichever book of mine brought you here, I’m grateful, and you now have a little piece of me with you.
